In the world we live in today, disasters occur at an alarming rate. Could they have been prevented from occurring? If emergency response had been more effective, how much less destruction might they have caused? Will similar disasters happen again? Why Disasters Happen...And How To Prevent Them examines the safety and security of an organizations people, facilities and assets, as well as the communities in which they are located from exposure to man-made accidents, terrorist acts and natural disasters.
Case studies of disasters that have occurred at various times and in different places are used to demonstrate how operational risk management practices or the lack of them, influence event likelihood and outcomes across all hazard domains. Risk factors contributing to the cause of these historical events are identified and are used in the development of a more effective approach that risk managers can use to ensure that their organizations have strong safety and security programs in place. Lessons learned in this workshop can be used as both a planning guide for implementing effective enterprise risk management practices and as an emergency response resource in crisis situations. The workshop is designed to offer realistic, practical advice that can be applied on a daily basis.
